Orlistat weight loss pills
Orlistat are weight loss pills that can help you lose weight if you are overweight or obese.
It does this by blocking gut enzymes which help you digest fat and can prevent you absorbing about a third of the fat you eat.
The fat will then pass out of your body in the stools (faeces). The dose of medication is 120mg three times daily with each meal and we also recommend reducing your fat intake to 30% of your total calorie intake to support your weight loss and minimise the side effects that can be caused from passing fat in the stools such as flatulence and fatty or oily poo.
Orlistat is suitable for patients over 18 years of age with a BMI of 30 or a BMI of 27 with another condition that would benefit from losing weight. The goal is to reduce weight by 5% within the first 12 weeks of treatment. Before taking your medication, we will assess if this is suitable for you personally as it is not recommended in certain medical conditions or with some medicines.
Consultations
Face to face clinics take place at Queens Road Surgery with an initial assessment of height/weight/BMI/waist circumference and blood pressure. We then offer to take before photos (minus head shot) front and side profile. Review medication to check if this may be adjusted if not weight friendly and review lifestyle plus barriers to weight loss. We then set appropriate goals and demonstrate the injection if this is chosen treatment option.
Virtual clinics will be via Microsoft Teams and will require patient to stand on scales and for us to see the accurate weight for the patient on that day. The rest of the appointment is as above.
